Having written over ten articles I have now reached the heady heights of being classified as an "Expert Author"! However, I still consider myself to be a real beginner, and article writing is not a skill that comes naturally to me - I too am a 'newbie', so please don't feel patronised by my heading! In this article I want to provide a beginner's view as to what I understand by the term 'article writing' and how others in my position can start to develop the necessary skills. By definition, article writing, or article marketing, is the act of drafting short articles and then submitting them to online directories. Some people write articles because they are natural writers who enjoy the process of putting the proverbial 'pen to paper'. Others have expertise in particular areas and want to share their knowledge with others. The majority of writers view articles as powerful marketing tools that can be used to drive traffic to a blog or website. Let's consider the last of these reasons, the use of article marketing to drive traffic to your site. An article can be a great opportunity for producing links back to your site. The more articles you post, the more content you will have out there with more backlinks to your site. As Bill Gates famously said - "Content is King" - and who are we to argue with Bill Gates! With submission software it is possible for the articles to be picked up by other websites and blogs, so increasing the number of backlinks. Your main objective is to write as many articles as possible so that you can get your keywords circulated. This can be most effectively accomplished in 300 - 500 words. The first stumbling block with any article writer is the topic to write about. As a golden rule, you should know, or have experience of, what you're writing about. With a little knowledge you can write with passion and give value. If really stuck for an idea, visit forums that have discussions about your niche area and find out what people are really asking questions about - you'll also find lots of answers that can form the basis for your article! There are four key elements to writing your article: 1. use keywords - find what keywords people are using when they search for your topic in Google or other search engines. General opinion seems to be that you should use your key word or words in the article about once every 100 words or so, giving you a 'key word density' of between 1% and 3%. 2. your title - this must capture the attention of the reader, and the key word should always be used in the title. 3. article length - keep your article relatively short, I would suggest between 300 and 500 words. Many readers have short attention spans, so it's really important not to go on too long. 4. resource box - it's so important to get this right! Research for guidance as to how to construct your resource box, and tell your reader how to take action. It's often best, once you've got your topic and heading, to just write. Let the words flow and just write down whatever comes into your head - you can always go back and re-draft until you're happy with the final product.
