Malayalam author C.V. Balakrishnan has drawn the wrath of thoseapparently incensed by his speech at a cultural gathering atPayyannur here a few days ago to commemorate the slainRevolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan. Posters condemning the author appeared at different parts ofPayyannur town on Thursday. The campaign took an intimidatory turnon Friday, when posters were found stuck at his doorstep saying heowed his peaceful life in the ‘red village' to themagnanimity of the ‘Marxists.' The red village that the fourposters pasted on the walls and the gate of his house referred tois Kalikkadavu in Pilikode panchayat, a stronghold of the CommunistParty of India (Marxist), which is in Kasaragod but hardly a15-minute drive from Payyannur. The posters headlined ‘Ayussinte Pusthakam' (referring to thename of his novel) said ‘fascists in the party of Pinarayi'were the ones who had taken him to hospital when he was injured ina road accident. The posters were written on behalf of‘Janam' (people). Mr. Balakrishnan apparently drew the hostility of local partyworkers after he said in his inaugural speech at a culturalgathering organised in Payyannur on May 29 by the Left CoordinationCommittee to commemorate Chandrashekharan, who was hacked to deathnear Onchiyam by alleged CPI(M) workers on May 4, that time wouldprove that the murder of the RMP leader was not a victory. When contacted over phone, the author told The Hindu that the poster campaign was an attempt to intimidate him."As a writer, I have been writing and speaking honestly onissues. These posters are an indication of the seriousness of thesituation when a writer is threatened for reacting honestly,"he said. He said in his inaugural speech, he had not touched upon politicalissues relating to the murder of Chandrashekharan, but emphasisedthat he was not with people who favoured cruelty and politicalviolence. "My main focus in the speech was the cultural shockin the wake of the murder of Chandrashekharan as articulatedpowerfully by poet Mahasweta Devi during her recent visit to theregion," he added. He said police personnel came to his house on Friday morning andregistered a case on a complaint lodged by him.
