Myth: Most cheaters sleep with people they don't know Fact: You may see depressed spouses looking for cheating partners in bars in movies and TV shows, but in the real world it would be difficult for you to find somebody who cheated on their spouse with a complete stranger. In fact many affairs start between old friends and acquaintances, and affairs with co-workers and professional colleagues are the most common. Myth: Only men cheat Fact: This myth is very popular, but it couldn't be any further from the truth. The Associated Press and the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy published a study on infidelity in 2012, and their results found that men and women are more or less equally likely to cheat on their partners. Fifty-seven percent of the men they surveyed admitted that they've cheated in every relationship they've had, but so did 54% of the women. Sixty-eight percent of women claimed that they would cheat on their partners if they knew that they would never be caught, and 74% of men admitted them same thing. Myth: When most spouses cheat it's a spur of the moment decision Fact: Some people may choose to believe this myth because it's more comforting for them to imagine that their spouses had a terrible spontaneous moment, but unfortunately most spouses spend a lot of time thinking about cheating before they commit the act. Cheating doesn't happen overnight; many spouses can spend months weighing the pros and cons of having an affair before they choose whether or not to act on their urges. Myth: There are never any signs of cheating before a spouse finds out Fact: The saying that hindsight is 20/20 is tragically true for many people who have been cheated on. This is most likely the hardest truth most spouses who have been cheated on have to face, but when many people who have been cheated on take time to reflect on past events they wonder how they were so blind to the truth. You may think that it's normal for your wife or husband to refuse to let you look through their phone or e-mail now, but it's possible that in a few months you'll be kicking yourself for not noticing this big red flag.
