Cornhole is one of those games that has a country picnic kind of feel to it, one that evokes memories of fresh squeezed lemonade, newly cut grass and barefoot kids in bathing suits running through the sprinkler. It is a game that is as simple as it is timeless. There are no complicated rules and it does not require expensive equipment. It's suited as well for children as it is for adults and there is even an official “American Cornhole Association” for those that want to take the game to a higher level. Cornhole is a game similar to bean bag toss, which is a game that might be more familiar to some people than the less common cornhole name. The equipment consists of two platforms with a hole in near the top and two sets of weighted bags. The platforms measure two feet by four feet with one end raised twelve inches higher than the other end and a six inch hole that is nine inches from the top of the higher end. The object of the Cornhole game is to toss, or “pitch” the bags into the holes, winning a point for every bag that lands on the platform and three points for every bag that makes it through the hole. The game is played until 21 points are won by either one player or one team if teams are playing. There are innings in which each team or player pitches 4 bags each and can choose which side of the platform they want to pitch from as long as all four bags in that inning are pitched from the same side. The pitchers box is defined by the bottom of the platform being the foul line which cannot be stepped outside of when pitching. Each inning is timed, giving the player 20 seconds to pitch each bag with the timer starting when the pitcher steps into the pitching box ready to throw the bags. This is the aspect of the game that gives itan added challenge from a simple bean bag toss game as the players have to act quickly but with accuracy. It can be made more fun by mixing up the teams with combinations of children and adults, men versus women, parents versus kids or any combination that stirs up some friendly rivalry and adds to the fun of the game. It's a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon outside, away from the television and computer, enjoying life's simple pleasures from times past.
