If you or someone you know is diagnosed with cancer it can be a scary road ahead. Others worry or fear getting cancer. You can lessen the risk of getting cancer by understanding what it is, how it grows, and what to do to prevent it. Cancer begins with abnormal cell growth. Cancer cells eat, grow, change, and spread into a tumor in the body and will continue to grow until stopped, maintains Rosenthal (pg. 18) Modern medicine stops cell growth using surgery to cut out cancer cells, chemotherapy to poison them, and radiation to burn them. Once you are a victim to this disease and treatment, survival becomes your main focus. No one wants cancer. However, estimates show in 2008 new cancer cases in the U. S. for Men will be 745,100, and for Women 692,000. Half of all men and one-third of all women will develop cancer during their lifetimes. It is estimated that California will have the highest new cancer cases this year. These statistics are shown on the American Cancer Society webpage. It is heartbreaking to know many people are threatened by cancer when it is possible to prevent it. Preventing or lowering the risks of cancer means lessening the toxins you live with. You can deter toxins from entering the body through what you put in your mouth, on your skin, in your homes, and the environment around you. Toxins, also known as poisons and carcinogens, come in many ways. Here are a few examples and some suggestions to reduce toxin build-up and stay healthy. 1. Refined carbohydrates are in processed foods, and many fast-food restaurants. These foods have added sugar, salt, refined grains and oils, chemical additives and preservatives to improve the taste and texture, and make the food last longer. One of these chemicals is monosodium glutamate, MSG, the flavor enhancer. Erb claims “MSG is put in food for two reasons: to make us choose the product that has it over one that doesn’t, and to make us eat more of that product” (p.105). MSG is addictive. When eating refined carbohydrates you can develop cravings for the food. Look at ingredient labels on packages. You can learn to read labels by looking up “foods” or chemicals to learn what you are eating and bringing into your home. Or, you can chose not to buy the product. Increase fiber intake. Fiber helps to absorb toxins and aids in flushing them from the body. High quality, high fiber foods come from vegetables, greens, and fruit. These foods supply phytonutrients, nutrients only found in plant foods. They prevent cells from damage and helps rid toxins in the body. Adding more fruits, vegetables, and greens to your meals can increase fiber. Eat whole foods and some whole grains. Whole foods come from the ground and when you eat them you absorb the nutrition they provide. Whole grains and beans have a good amount of fiber but, they increase insulin hormone production and can cause weight gain. You can lessen these foods in your diet and get fiber from fruits, vegetables and greens. Local farmer stands, farmers markets, grocery stores, natural food markets are where you can buy whole foods. Look in the fruit and vegetable sections. Reduce and eventually remove refine foods from your diet. Refine foods comes in many forms - white flour, white rice, breads, cereals, pancakes, waffles, ice cream, pastries, sugar, candy, sodas, snack and “junk” foods, prepackaged meals - canned, boxed or frozen. Besides, chemical additives they have low to no nutrient value or fiber. Cut out artificial foods. Artificial foods do not convert into energy needed to aid life. They come as sodas, diet drinks, artificial sweeteners, colorings, and flavorings put in food products. If nature doesn’t provide this “food” or additive naturally, it is not real or whole food. Move your body. This keeps blood sugar levels down and strengthens bones and muscles. Some suggestions - walk, hike, and ride a bike, swim, yoga, or workout at the gym. 2. Refined fats are heated at high temperatures to keep them from becoming rancid. They are hydrogenated to make them more stable and change the texture of some foods. The body has difficulty converting refined fats into energy so; it is stored in fat cells with other toxins. The cells can get sick, the body can get fat, and disease can develop. Refined fats are in processed foods, peanut oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and the like. Eat good fats. The body has a premium grade of fuel – fat. Desirable fats come from olives, cold pressed olive oil, unrefined canola oil, avocados, raw nuts and seeds, coconut oil, oily fish such as salmon, flax seed oil. These are natural fat sources of fuel. 3. Pesticides and irradiation aim to kill pests on food. They are sprayed and zapped on the food you buy from most grocery stores. You eat the food and the pesticides become part of a new cell that becomes an abnormal cell – a cause of cancer. Eat organic foods. They do not have pesticides and are not irradiated. Buy at some grocers, natural food markets, local farms or farmers markets. Look in your local paper for times and places near you. 4. Chemicals in the home and garden are in lotions, soaps and shampoos, laundry products, paint, carpets, gardening and cleaning supplies. Made with chemicals, they absorb through the skin or the air you breathe and enter the body causing cell damage. Buy nontoxic products. Natural food stores and online stores provide natural nontoxic products for your home and garden. 5. Dangerous chemicals in the water you drink and bathe are chlorine and fluoride. These are toxic chemicals added to most public water to kill bacteria, viruses and ward off cavities in teeth. They are also poisons, toxins delivered to our home through faucets and showerheads. Add clean pure water to your home. You can buy a water filter and filtered showerhead or purifier for your home. Call your local Public Water company for a list of chemicals used in the public water system in your area. 6. Cigarette smoking, second hand smoke, and chemicals in the air are toxins we breathe. Chemicals added to cigarettes can cause lung cancer. You breathe second hand smoke, industrial wastes, transportation emissions, and absorb these chemicals in your body. Reduce your exposure. If you smoke, stop. You can get help from smoking cessation programs or natural therapies like acupuncture or hypnotherapy. You can remove yourself from any toxic cause and share your objection with those who can do something about removing those chemicals. Call the Health Department for an air quality report in your area. We have become a toxic world. We can lessen our risk of developing cancer by making informed choices about how we live. We can start by making a few new choices at a time. This will reduce the toxic load on the body that causes many diseases of cancer. References Rosenthal, M. Sara, Ph.D. (2001).
