Men who take calcium supplementation in the form of pills may put their heart health at risk, medical experts say quoting recent findings in studying bone health have discovered. For years there has been some contention within the medical community on the supposed health benefits of calcium supplements. These supplements have been prescribed for increasing calcium and thereby strengthening bones in the body to prevent osteoporosis. However, despite their supposed benefits, this is not the first instance where a prescribed method of treatment has been found to have detrimental side-effects. Similar cases have been found regarding bisphosphonate treatment with medications like Fosamax which have resulted in class action lawsuits. The latest series of studies from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study have confirmed long held fears that excessive poorly controlled calcium supplementation may lead to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and death; particularly among men. With growing concern over the risk to men’s cardiovascular health, growing support for food as the source for calcium supplementation is becoming prevalent. The study spanned for 12 years since 1995 following 400,000 men, who took 1000mg of calcium daily, were 20 percent more likely to succumb to heart disease than those who did not take supplements. The research team found that among patients aged over 50 as much as 50 percent of men and 70 percent of women were taking daily calcium supplements in the USA. Although this current batch of evidence is not enough to completely convict calcium supplements as a health risk, it does urge people to be more cautious about taking them especially over the counter and without a doctor’s prescription. The study these findings were based off were not randomized trials so further study is needed to confirm the association between heart disease and calcium supplements. Health experts agree that until medical science can determine the safety of calcium supplements for patients, particularly the elderly who are at greatest risk for heart disease, as well as, osteoporosis. Diet experts recommend eating dairy foods for strengthening bones may be beneficial but should be done in moderation since they often contain fats and unwanted calories. The best food sources of calcium could come from green leafy vegetables supplemented with nutrients found in nuts and fruits that provide the best means of protecting bones from osteoporosis without causing risk of heart disease. Osteoporosis is a global epidemic that is affecting many of the elderly around the world. Calcium supplementation is one of some prescriptions that people take to ward off osteoporosis however with rising concerns over its safety this may be related to other osteoporosis medications that have been called into question, like bisphosphonates.
