The haze that sat on top of the Valley on Monday afternoon isexpected to be cleared away by southeasterly winds Tuesday as thenorthern Arizona fires that pushed the smoke south continue toblaze. Monday's smoke came from the Sunflower Fire in the Tonto NationalForest, which remained uncontained Monday evening, according toDavid Albo with the Tonto National Forest. Other fires are burning across the state, including the GladiatorFire, which forced almost all residents of Crown King to evacuatetheir homes Monday afternoon, according to Dwight D'Evelyn with theYavapai County Sheriff's Office. Only about 12 homes in Crown King are still occupied, D'Evelynsaid, and the fire has burned about 1,300 acres of land so far. The fire was started by a house fire that ignited a propane tank.None of the fire was contained as of Monday morning. On the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, the Bull Flat Fire hasburned more than 700 acres of land near the Canyon Creek FishHatchery, according to Blanche Hook with the Bureau of IndianAffairs Hook said it was 45 percent contained Monday afternoon, and it mayhave been started by a lightning strike. The Elwood Fire has burned 1,506 acres on the San Carlos IndianReservation, according to Duane Chapman with the Bureau of IndianAffairs. It was 5 percent contained as of Monday afternoon, and thecause is under investigation.
