ComForcare experts share suggestions for older adults to get a better night’s rest to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Home care experts agree that getting a good night’s sleep is essential to physical health and emotional well-being. But, just how much sleep do adults need? A recent study by the National Institutes of Health suggests that healthy older people may require about 1.5 hours less sleep than younger adults, an average of 7.5 hours per night. The study indicates that seniors sleep less even when given the opportunity for more sleep because of age-related changes in the ability to fall asleep and remain asleep. Experts have said that older adults who do not sleep well are more likely to suffer from depression, attention and memory problems and excessive daytime sleepiness. They are also likely to suffer more nighttime falls, have increased sensitivity to pain and use more prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids. Insufficient sleep can also lead to serious health problems in older adults, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weight problems and breast cancer in women. ComForcare’s goal is to help each of its home care clients to live a healthy, independent, and happy lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, including getting the rest and support and assistance they need. Home care providers work with clients to help them regulate their schedule and achieve more effective rest. Elderly care clients who may be dealing with sleep difficulties can also benefit from companionship services, assistance with household tasks, healthy meal preparation, and dementia home care assistance. Here are some tips from the ComForcare home care team to help older adults fall asleep faster and stay asleep throughout the night. 1. Use technology. There are several sound machines and other sleeping devices that help eliminate or muffle outside noises, which will help light sleepers. 2. Turn off the TV at night. Experts say the bright lights, sounds and images flickering across the screen trick the brain into staying awake. Those who prefer to leave a television in the bedroom should turn it off an hour before bed and try reading at night. 3. Create a dedicated sleeping room. Some people also use their bedrooms as an office, laundry room, or crafting space. Try and keep the bedroom only for sleeping and make it as cozy and comfortable as possible to help make the room more inviting for sleep. 4. Eliminate all lights. Turn off any night lights or hallway lights and close the door. Another option is to get an eye mask to block out light. 5. Keep a routine. Follow the same routine each night and the body will learn when it is time to shut down and go to sleep. Family caregivers and home care providers can help seniors set an evening routine and assist them in sticking to it for the first few weeks until the behaviors become habit. Home Care Services Can Help Seniors who have trouble falling asleep at night should have a conversation with their family caregivers or home care provider to determine new behaviors that may encourage better rest. Keep in mind that while it can sometimes take a while to adjust to a new schedule or new behaviors, with patience and consistency, it is likely that results will be apparent within a few weeks.
