Choosing a DSLR Camera for Video vs. a Camcorder

Choosing a DSLR Camera for Video vs. a Camcorder.">If your budget for video recording equipment is limited, then you will be faced with the decision about whether to choose a basic camcorder or a DSLR camera. While your initial instinct might be to go with the camcorder because it is specifically designed to record video, many DSLR cameras today have become far superior than most basic camcorders. The first DSLR camera that was able to record high-definition video was produced by Nikon. The Nikon D90 was produced in 2008 and it ushered in the era of digital SLR cameras with video recording features. In may appear at first blush that choosing a DSLR camera over a camcorder is an amateurish mistake. While many DSLR cameras are well out of the range of the video hobby enthusiast’s budget, the quality that can be produced by these cameras is considered far superior than a basic camcorder. One such example that supports this idea is the fact that the major television show House on Fox Television was one of the first (and we emphasize the word first) major shows that had at least a portion of an episode recorded using DSLR cameras. Gale Tattersall used the Canon 5D Mark II to record the entire season six finale. Other shows have attempted to use camcorders for certain scenes, but the quality of the video proved to be inadequate in most instances. One of the major advantages of DSLR cameras is that they are effective for use in low light situations. The sensors that come equipped and DSLR cameras are specifically designed to handle low light situations. Most camcorders that you can find in any store are incapable of handling these low light situations. One of the advantages of using a video camcorder however, is that they are designed to be used with one hand - thus the common term “handheld”. However, when you are looking for the best quality rather than the most convenient for recording purposes, how you maneuver or manipulate the DSLR camera will not be that much of a concern. One of the major shortcomings or disadvantages with DSLR cameras for video is that there is a limit on the clip length that you can take. If you require shots that will be continuous for longer durations of time, beyond the scope of the clip limits for the particular camera you choose, then a DSLR camera is not reliable enough for your requirements. You may also find that requiring an external microphone can be a burden in some situations. Overall, DSLR cameras offer a number of advantages over camcorder for video recording. If you are in the market for new video recording equipment, but don’t have a budget for the more professional models, a DSLR camera could be the ideal intermediate solution.
