Home care planning can sometimes be difficult for families. Knowing when to approach aging parents or loved ones and what to say about their long-term care can be challenging. In this Los Angeles Times article from earlier this year, a man shared his story about how his approach sent his mother into such a fury that she didn’t speak to him for three years. Although people have good intentions when it comes to talking with their aging parents and relatives, the conversation often creates negative feelings. Below are some tips on how to effectively communicate with loved ones without offending them: Don’t wait. Talking with loved ones about long-term care like home care or elderly care can be a sensitive subject. Older adults may feel as though they are a burden and that their children or grandchildren do not care about them. What they may not realize, however, is that their relatives are simply trying to find the most cost effective, safe and comfortable living option for them. The sooner it is discussed, the better, and it’s always best to be proactive instead of reactive. Unprepared, people have to scramble to find appropriate home care after an injury or health issue. Don’t ambush them. Before approaching elder loved ones about the topic, first let them know about the need to have a conversation. Keep in mind that the discussion is not an intervention, and avoid putting them on the defensive. Share with them that they are loved. Be prepared. Be sure to do research before the talk and set an agenda, prioritizing the topics to be discussed. In doing research, be sure to consider all options. Remember, elders who are apprehensive about moving to an independent or assisted living community or nursing facility have alternatives. With the help of home care assistants, people can remain in their home indefinitely. When professional caregivers support older adults with the activities of daily living such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, dressing, bathroom assistance and other services, home care allows them to remain at home where their quality of life is enhanced. Home care services are provided on an hourly, daily, weekly or live-in basis. Listen to their needs. Regardless of the option chosen (assisted living community, nursing home, home care, or family care), make sure the older loved ones’ independence and what brings them joy is considered. Listen to and consider their priorities. Understand that the conversation may get heated and if it does, try again on another day.
