Home care services offer elderly care clients the assistance they need to live comfortably and safely in their own home. However, for some families, home care services can be a tricky topic. Those who are nervous about talking to a loved one about long-term home care should know they are not alone. Millions of Americans are already caring for their aging parents and relatives and those numbers will only increase over time. But taking that first step to start conversations with loved ones about long-term care is an important one. What to Look For What are the signs a loved one needs help? There are several – many which are noticed during visits with relatives. 1. Pay attention to the condition of the home. Is it messy or cluttered? Are kitchen supplies being put away in the right places? Are bills being paid on time? 2. Look at the condition of the person. For instance, notice hygiene and clothing. Are they taking showers, brushing teeth and changing clothes on a daily basis? More importantly, do the clothes make sense for the weather or season? Weight loss is also a sign that they may need additional care. 3. Confusion and forgetfulness are both important factors to consider. Are they missing doctor’s appointments, forgetting to take medications, missing religious services when they have been attending regularly their whole lives? Are they confused when you talk to them about topics that they would normally understand? Share Your Concerns If the answers to these questions are yes, it is time to start talking about long-term care or home care services. Before approaching loved ones and communicating with them about the subject, let them know why the discussion is necessary. Remember, it is not an intervention so do not put them on the defensive. Let them know you love them and would like to talk about the future. Be sure to do research before the talk and set an agenda of what will be discussed. In doing the research, be sure to consider all elderly care options. Remember, if elder loved ones are apprehensive about living in an assisted living or nursing home, there are other alternatives. With the help of home care assistants, people can remain in their home indefinitely. By providing assistance with activities of daily living such as light housekeeping, meal preparation, dressing, bathroom assistance and other services, home care is an effective solution for the elderly who prefer to remain at home where their quality of life is enhanced without the stress and hardship of interrupted routines and daily habits. Home care services can be provided on an hourly, daily, weekly or live-in basis. Regardless of the option chosen, be sure to consider the importance of loved ones’ independence and what brings them joy. When expressing concerns, do not mandate anything. Instead, listen and consider their priorities. Understand that it is not always going to be smooth. If the conversation gets heated, try again on another day.
