Top 8 islands of Tasmania

Business,Business News,Travel & Tourism
The islands of Tasmania are great places to visit in your next tour. This article provides top 8 islands of Tasmania.

There are 334 islands off Tasmania ranging from rocky outcrops to inhabited islands. I have listed down the top 8 islands:

1. King Island

The King Island is located well north of the north -west tip off Tasmania, exposed to the relentless winds of the Roaring Forties. The island is inhabited by 1800 people who are considered to be ‘greenies’ in seeing the wisdom of letting nature have its way and limiting mechanical and chemical interference to the minimum. As a result, consumers don’t hesitate to pay top dollars for the produce, like cream, cheese and fine food from the sea.

2. Cape Barren Island

The second largest island in the Furneaux Group of islands is the Cape Barren Island which lies south of Flinders Island. The island is a home to about 70 members of an aboriginal community.

3. Maria Island

This island is a 100 square kilometre national park and marine reserve, located about 4 kilometres off the east coast of Tasmania. In its years of European settlement, the island served as a base for whaling. Then it served as a penal facility for some 25 years. In the second half of the 1800s, attempts were made to farm the land of the island, but ultimately it was abandoned. Wildlife abound in the island.

4. Robbins island

Robins Island, located in the north- west corner of Tasmania, is a private property. It is the 7th largest island of Tasmania and lies south to the adjacent Walker Island.

5. Three Hummock Island

The island is so named because of the 3 low hills that it contains. It is slightly smaller than the Hunter Island. It is an entirely protected nature reserve and has a private home too.

6. Bruny Island

There are only 4 significantly populated islands of Tasmania and Bruny Island is the 3rd among them. It is approximately 360 square km in area inhabiting about 600 people. The people here are simple beings. They are mostly artists, farmers, retirees, cheese makers, and others in the service of the tourists.

7. Macquaire Island

The Macquaire Island is located in the wild Southern Ocean, 1300 km south of Tasmania. In a good year it has much as 3 days of sunshine. The rest of the year the island is extremely cold and windy. It boasts to be a World Heritage Area and is administered by the government of Tasmania.

8. Flinders Island

Flinders Island, approximately 70 km long and 40 km wide, is the largest island of the Furneaux Group. It has nearly twice the area of the King Island but only half its population. Flinders Island has 2 towns, namely, Lady Barron and Whitemark. Flinders Island is a popular tourist destination and has thousands of visitors flocking in every year. There are activities in the island that visitors can enjoy, like biking, fishing, fossicking, kayaking, golfing, etc. The island is also rich in wildlife, like kangaroos, wombats and myriads of birds. Plus there are great services of accommodation and car hire in Flinders Island.

Robert Louis is a renowned author. He has travelled worldwide, even to the most isolated and unique places in the world. In this article, he has cited 8 islands of Tasmania.
