If you have an idea of what it means to be a great hypnotist, I want you to imagine you are that person, and later on when we come on to the drill, a special exercise which has been designed to accelerate your skill's learning curve, I want you to always engage in that exercise in a way that you pretend, imagine or act as though you were this person and you have these skills, including all the characteristics. Let's take an example from history that was much larger than life, and in fact, much more flamboyant than any fictional character that I have come across yet: Franz Anton Mesmer, the father, or should we say the great- grandfather of hypnosis. Now, Franz Mesmer had the habit of using every trick in his amateur theatrics book in order to make his sessions impressive. He would storm in, in long flowing robes, keeping you waiting for ages. He had a long, piercing gaze. He would do all his sessions at twilight, just when evening was setting in. These were all conditions that set a phenomenal atmosphere, a piece of theater in which his hypnotic influence could take effect. Now, if you are going to use even such an extreme character to base your own career as a hypnotist on, then what I am going to ask you to do when you engage in any of the exercises is get into the character. Be as flamboyant. Make the expansive gestures. Look with the piercing gaze. By all means, go to town on this. After all, these are only exercises that I am going to present to you. Then, when you decide in which environment you want to use your hypnosis, you learn to tone down those burlesque, over the top mannerisms and make them adapt or fit the context you want to use them in. Now, as a starting point, I am going to encourage you to go way to one extreme because it is always way easier to move backwards from an extreme back into a center of normality, than to go from a center of normality and start pushing at the edges. So with that thought in mind, let's dive into some of the theories and structures behind the exercise so you understand what you are doing, as well as enthusing about how you are going to do this.
