When you first start out producing your own videos, you will find a great deal of information and opinions about video editing. Editing video editing is the process by which you take footage that you recorded, cut and splice it together to create a compelling movie, short, instructional video, seminar, or any other type of video that you desire. It is important to have quality shots to work with before you head into the editing stage of your production. If all you have is of poor quality or doesn’t convey what you had intended from the beginning, then you will be limited in how effective the editing process can be. Raw Footage No matter what you’ve recorded, if you watch the video before editing is performed on it, then you will see a number of glaring issues that would make watching the video difficult for anyone to enjoy. The natural process of recording a video generally means that there will be quick cuts from one scene to the next, uneven lighting, angles that are too similar from one scene to the next and sequences that were recorded out of order or in an order that wasn’t ideal at the time. This is called your raw footage. Video editing takes the raw footage, maneuvers it in such a way that creates a smooth transition from one scene to the next, creates a title, credits, adds sound including music and effects, and you can add visual effects such as fade ins and fade outs and even dissolves. How Much Raw Footage Do You Need? Depending on the purpose of your video as well as the intended completed length of your film project, the amount of raw footage that you will need will vary. If you have a script that calls for a 30 minute video, you may need an hour’s worth of footage or more. It depends on the quality of video that you have to work with, as well as the lighting, and your personal preferences. What Will You Need for Video Editing? For video editing, you will need a fairly decent computer with the video card and strong processing speeds or power. The more advanced video editing that is required, the more powerful the computer will need to be. You’ll also need video editing software. There are a number of different products on the market to choose from and the one you work with should be one that is easy for you to use and learn as well as one that you are comfortable working with. To get started, there are a few decent free video editing programs, but these have serious limitations in a professional capacity. When you get into the world of editing your visuals, it’s best to begin small and work your way up. Focus on short videos, such as 5 to 10 minutes long. This will give you the opportunity to determine what tools you need and how to build a project from the ground up. The basics of video editing are actually quite simple; once you get these down, you will progress to a more advanced level. Rick Davis, an experienced TV Producer/Director, invites you to increase your knowledge of video and television production. He has plenty of free how-to videos and PDF cheat sheets to help make your video productions easier. To see more details on this topic check out his YouTube video entitled: Easy Video Editing.
