Home Care Service Encourages Clients to Reduce Sodium Levels

Business News,Health,Seniors
ComForcare Home Care shares tips to help elderly care clients avoid hidden sources of sodium for a more nutritious diet and improved overall health. Home care services offer help with many aspects of daily life, including one of the most important – nutrition. There is a Chinese proverb that states, “He who takes medicine and neglects diet, wastes the skill of his physician.” It’s no secret that Americans in general could benefit from a healthier diet, and luckily, many are making changes to select more nutritious meals for themselves and their families. With the introduction of convenience foods into our society, one aspect of health that has become problematic is the consumption of too much salt. The average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium a day – more than twice the 1,500 milligrams recommended by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Furthermore, 75 percent of our sodium consumption comes from processed and restaurant foods. While a little salt is okay, eating too much can create serious health problems, including high blood pressure and can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. At ComForcare Home Care, we encourage our home care clients to make healthy diet choices and are happy to help them in this endeavor. So how do we shop and eat smarter? Obviously less eating out is a good start, but the AHA/ASA says high levels of sodium are not just found in French fries and potato chips. Pay closer attention to what you’re putting in your shopping cart by being aware of the “Salty Six.” 1. Breads and rolls. Although most breads do not taste too salty, one piece can have as much as 230 milligrams of sodium. Have a couple sandwiches a day? The bread alone could put you close to 1,000 milligrams of sodium. 2. Cold cuts and cured meats. Deli or pre-packaged turkey can contain as much as 1,050 milligrams of sodium. 3. Pizza. So we all know pizza isn’t exactly good for us, but many people do not realize the amount of sodium they are consuming while enjoying their favorite slice of pie. Just one slice can contain up to 760 milligrams of sodium. 4. Poultry. Most people consider chicken a very healthy meal, and most of the time it can be. But you have to be very careful reading labels because you will find a wide range of sodium levels. Skinless, grilled chicken is okay, but just 3 ounces of frozen and breaded nuggets can add nearly 600 milligrams of sodium. 5. Soup. Though we consider this a warm comfort food, one can of chicken noodle soup can have up to 940 milligrams of sodium. 6. Sandwiches. Everything from grilled cheese to turkey sandwiches to hamburgers can contain large amounts of sodium. We already know the dangers of breads and cured meats, add them together with ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise and you can easily surpass 1,500 milligrams of sodium in one sitting. This list may surprise you, but there are still many foods we can enjoy that are not loaded with sodium. Look for fresh fruits and vegetables at the market and pair them with grilled or baked lean meats and you have a delicious meal that is also good for you. Partner with friends, family, and home care providers to plan nutritious meals. Home care services can also help clients with transportation to and from the grocery store or assist with errands to keep the cupboards stocked with healthy choices.
