When you plan on creating a movie or any kind of video, you need to have a story in mind. Even if you are producing a corporate instructional video, there is a story that needs to be told. There are a few basic components to stories that you should keep in mind when beginning to outline the video you plan on producing. The Purpose What is the purpose of the story? Every story needs to have a theme. This theme could be that good triumphs over evil, or that hard work and dedication will increase revenue for a company. If you don’t have a purpose in mind for telling a story, then you will end up creating a rambling series of events that will confuse the viewer and muddle the storyline. Plot The plot of any story is its basic structure. The plot is a sequence or series of events that move a character from one point to the next, moving him or her closer to their goals or to the purpose that you, as a writer, had in telling the story in the first place. Poorly structured plots can undermine a very well constructed theme or purpose. When working on a video script, it’s best to have a well formed outline design before you begin to write the actual script. Emotion People are connected to one another through emotion. Movies and videos that create emotion also tap into the inherent emotions of their viewers. If you are creating a documentary about poverty in your hometown, you’ll want to instill that emotional foundation in your storyline for your viewers to connect to. If you are creating an action adventure film, if you ignore the emotional component in the storyline, then you will be basing your entire movie on action. If the viewer has no investment in the story or the characters, they will become disinterested. When an audience member loses interest in a movie, he or she will either stop watching or become overly critical of all of the facets of the film. Make sure that your story or the characters you create tap into the emotions of your target audience. Dialogue When you are making a video, in most cases you are going to deal with dialogue. It is essential that the dialogue you write is not only true to the characters speaking them, but also believable to your target audience. Writing dialogue can be one of the most challenging aspects of writing a story. Listen to the way people actually speak and when you can emulate that, then you will move closer to writing a story that connects to your audience. It takes years of practice to be able to write a compelling story. Many writers will give you the same advice, which is read and write every day. When you understand creative writing better, you will know what’s in a story. Rick Davis, an experienced TV Producer/Director, invites you to increase your knowledge of video and television production. He has plenty of free how-to videos and PDF cheat sheets to help make your video productions easier. To see more details on this topic check out his YouTube video entitled:Creative Writing - How I Improved My Writing Skills.
