HIV self-test kits are medical Devices that allow individuals to test themselves for the HIV virus without the assistance of a medical professional. This has caused considerable controversy in Australia as some individuals feel that this type of testing is prone to abuse and can leave the individual without much needed counseling and support. On the other hand HIV rapid test kits allow individuals to test for HIV who may not otherwise test at all. Many individual support of testing for HIV for reasons of convenience and privacy feeling uncomfortable about discussing the potential infection with a medical professional or HIV worker. This leaves the individual with an unknown HIV status and increases the risk of them going on to infect others with the virus. HIV rapid test kits have become increasingly popular in Australia and are readily available from online vendors such as head start testing whose sell ISO and GMP certified testing kits. HIV self-test kits allow concerned individuals the ability to test themselves for HIV with absolute privacy and convenience. One of these individuals do not enjoy the support and supervision that testing through a medical professional would provide they are at least the testing and of course medical assistance is still available to them at any time that they choose it. One argument made against the use of HIV rapid test kits is that individuals may abuse the test kits by showing a negative result to another party in the interest of the participating in unprotected sex. As with all methods of HIV testing it is essential to remember the HIV virus is only detectable by testing for the presence of HIV antibodies. These antibodies can take up to six months to be detectable and as such a negative result during this period of time is not a certainty that the virus is not present. As such with all methods of testing it is important to combine a negative result with a knowledge of the sexual partners history to determine if there has been a risk in recent months and their infection is not yet detectable. This is true regardless of the method of testing including every individual has been tested by a Medical professional. If used correctly and responsibly HIV self test kit provide the Australian public with a convenient private and alternative method to other testing methods that may not be suitable for that individual.
