The winters are bathed in a constant darkness, with rich velvet skies pierced only by the bright stars, while summers offer endless light with skies of a watery blue and gently dancing clouds. The Sub Antarctic Islands of Australia and New Zealand There is no doubt that any nature enthusiast will relish the chance to go to either the North or the South Pole. The best way to make the most of what these regions have to offer is to take a polar expedition by cruise ship that focuses primarily on the area’s diverse and prolific wildlife. Most cruise ships are small, only accommodating up to 80 passengers. This means you get a more personal experience and can really make the most of the knowledge of the expert guides that accompany you on your trip. The Southern Ocean is home to an incredible variety of sea life and bird species. The waters of the Southern Ocean are rich in nutrients and goodness and millions of birds make it their home, at least for parts of the year. You are likely to see all kinds of wildlife on a polar expedition to this stunning area. Albatrosses, Penguins and Cormorants are among the many species that come every year to breed; they can be seen in their droves at the right times of the year. Many of the islands in this area have become synonymous with a particular species of bird. For example, Snares Island is famed for its Tubenoses - there are reportedly 60 million of these large, graceful birds inhabiting the island. Their large nostrils covered by tubes on their upper beaks make them quite distinct and also affords them their incredible sense of smell. The Yellow-eyed Penguin is the most prolific bird on the Auckland Islands. This is one of the smallest species of penguin and is thought to be the most ancient. It is relatively rare and is fighting a losing battle against the inevitable human development and the introduction of new predators. Despite their endangered status, much is being done to preserve these wonderful birds, however. You may see them waddling along the coastline or ducking and diving through the water searching for fish. A polar expedition is an enthralling way to spend a holiday and it is not just the bird life that makes these trips so wonderful. You may also have the opportunity to encounter the Dusky Dolphins, Orca and Sperm Whale, all of which will enrich your experience of this memorable and fascinating region.
