What's talent? Is it something you're born with, or is it something which develops after you've learned some basic skills? You may be born with it, but until you develop requisite skills your talent has no way to shine. These days, you need to be a multi-talented writer. You need to have skills in many different areas in order to build a successful career. In days gone by, new craftsmen served an apprenticeship, either formally, or informally. They learned their craft. Authors wrote several books, in order to learn how to write books. Magazine writers got rejection slips for years, before they sold a single article. Just as in days gone by, you need to learn writing skills to become successful and shine. Let's look at what you need to learn to become a multi-talented writer today. 1. You Need to Learn Copywriting Skills You need to learn how to sell your writing. Copywriting skills teach you to consider your audience. This consideration permeates every facet of your writing. You'll always be aware of your readers, because you've learned the basics of what gets people to pay attention, and how to engage their emotions. Copywriting is a priceless skill. When you've learned how to write copy, you can can use those skills for yourself, and for others. Copywriters are highly paid, and rightly so. 2. You Need to Learn How to Get Clients Getting clients isn't difficult. You just need to be persistent. I've often said that if you can write an email message which gets the recipient to respond, you can learn how to write for money. Many otherwise very competent writers will never be able to go freelance. Here's why. They fail to understand that people need to see your name and know what services you provide many times before they'll hire you. Yes, you can bid on writing jobs at the outsourcing sites, and get gigs, but by and large these kinds of jobs are low-paid. 3. You Need to Learn How to Build Your Writers' Platform You build your writers platform with everything you do. Your platform is simply your audience - your readers. Savvy writers always have an eye to that platform. They realize that everything they do is building their platform, and they do it deliberately. Unsuccessful writers never realize this. 4. You Need to Learn How to Stop Trading Hours for Dollars There are only so many hours in a day. This means that there's a ceiling on your income even if you're making $200 an hour. That ceiling vanishes when you create products which you can license. Writers have always licensed their work. Selling your book to a traditional publisher merely gives the publisher the license to publish your work. In return for that right, he pays you royalties. When you upload your book to Amazon, in a very real sense you're being paid royalties again. Amazon has the right to sell your book, and pays you a royalty for each copy sold, either 30%, or 70%. You can't become a multi-talented writer until you become a multi-skilled writer. When you realize that, you're well on the road to success. papers for sale
