Licensed Electrician Is Your Best Bet

Home Improvement
There are some tasks that can be done by a handyman and others that must be performed by a licensed electrician. Why? Because electrical wiring must be done precisely to code or it can result in fires, shocks, explosions, all causing damage to the building and inhabitants. Having wiring installed by an unlicensed amateur contractor can result in brushes with adversity and run-ins with the law.

What do these licensed professionals have to do to earn their certification? Plenty! In order to become a law abiding electrical expert, thousands of on-the-job hours and hundreds of hours in an academic setting are required. Many of these pros are trained as apprentices that means they are assigned to a highly skilled, experienced electrician for several years. This is similar to a resident or an intern working under the trained eye of a physician before earning his or her own M.D. certification. Both electricians and medical doctors are highly trained because they are responsible for human safety. You wouldn't want an unlicensed surgeon operating on you, so don't let an unlicensed handyman near your building's wiring.

What knowledge and skills will electrical workers learn through their training? Not only will they know how to run wires through your home to power up your appliances and light up your lamps, they will also be able to read blueprints, understand complex mathematics and memorize pages of building codes, hook up wires, test switches, install outlets and run conduit. Since wires are color coded, it's imperative that these pros be able to recognize the hues and not be colorblind. In order to become a master in this field, a worker would need a college degree, be in good shape physically, and have finely tuned eye-hand coordination.

What would happen if you didn't hire a licensed professional? At a minimum, you could have an iffy electrical system running through your house or business building. This means that lights could flicker, systems could go kaput at the worst possible moment, and replacement systems might have to be installed. You could also chance being rejected for homeowners' insurance, as your building would be a risk due to faulty wiring. If you knowingly hired an amateur, both you and the novice broke the law and may have to pay stiff fines for disregarding the legal rules and regulations. In worst-case scenarios, your home or office building could suffer damage due to electrical fires. Beloved family members or trusting employees could be harmed by jolts or shocks due to shabby workmanship.

A handyman's price tag might appear cheaper than that of a certified, licensed electrician in terms of dollars and cents but that is misleading. The costs of replacing faulty wiring, paying fines and legal fees for disregarding the law of building codes, paying higher premiums for homeowners insurance all add up. If a person was injured because of the error in judgment, not only will the decision maker have to live with that for the rest of his or her life, but also lawsuits may be filed because of negligence. Don't make the mistake of hiring a novice to do a job that requires a professional.
