Photovoltaic plays an important role for the energy saving policy
The use of photovoltaic (PV) is not limited to power generation, in fact, it also plays an important role for the energy saving policy. Especially in daylight control, translucent photovoltaic provides a wide range of space for curtain wall application. The transparency of the crystalline solar module depends on the distance between each of the battery, the closer the battery, the higher is the total PV output of the panel. In addition, a very close battery arrangement can reduce the amount of sunlight entering the building, in turn reducing the energy consumption due to refrigeration / air conditioning in the summer. But the architects usually do not consider optimizing the efficiency of photovoltaic curtain wall, but tend to higher user comfort.

In the process of a research project carried out by the German Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, scientists studied and compared the energy efficiency of three buildings installing photovoltaic curtain wall located in northern Brazil, Fortaleza, Florianopolis, in southern Brazil, and Frankfurt, Germany. EveliseDidoné, one of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology researchers explained.
Different approach to control curtain wall transparency
A completely different approach to control curtain wall transparency is the use of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Different from ordinary silicon solar cell panel, the DSC photosensitive layer uses the photosensitive dye to convert sunlight into electricity. In fact, organic photoactive layer for the DSC is very thin, and the selection of different colors and the thickness material can manufacture the solar panels with the different level of transparency. Rossella Corrao from Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, Italy explained: "compared with 20% efficiency of the silicon plate, the DSC module is only 8%, but compared to the crystal plate and the same power, they can actually produce up to 15% or more of energy each year. The reason is that the DSC module is more effectively under low light conditions. The silicon system differs in that DSC the efficiency does not depend on the angle of incidence light. Thus, DSC module is not necessarily to be positioned toward the sun, even if installed in a vertical or a horizontal direction, it will not lose efficiency.

The assembly will also highlight DieterMoor (Linz, Austria Arconsol) strategy on the optimization of the semi-transparent photovoltaic window performance and cost consideration, and LivioNichilio (University of Toronto) strategy to improve the energy efficiency of buildings through the use of integrated photovoltaic and thermal mirror glass curtain wall.
