A skin sparing mastectomy is a newer type of procedure used for women that have breast cancer. When a doctor decides to perform a mastectomy, it is designed to eliminate the cancerous cells in the woman's body. This is necessary to prevent them from spreading to other body parts. One of the worst parts of this is that a woman generally does not want to have her breasts removed. This is a part of her body that she is often proud of and it makes her feel sexy and feminine. When these are gone, it can leave a woman feeling self-conscious and embarrassed. In the past, a doctor would do this by completely removing both breasts. This left virtually nothing on the woman's chest. The woman would eventually go in for reconstructive surgery, but it can be hard to do this when there is nothing to work with. This is one of the main reasons that this procedure was created. A skin sparing mastectomy is performed much differently than a standard procedure of this kind and it requires the work of an experienced plastic surgeon. During this procedure, the doctor will remove the nipple and areola. Through this hole, he will remove the cancerous tissue from within the breast. The main difference is that he will leave the outer portion of the skin. This creates an envelope that can be filled with implants or tissue from the woman. The outer portion of the breast generally does not have cancerous tissue. The cancerous tissue is generally located inside of the breast. This method is a great way to save the breasts and reconstructive surgery is often completed as soon as this is over. This is called immediate reconstructive surgery and when the woman wakes up from the anesthesia, the cancer will be gone and she will have a new chest. Another key feature of a skin sparing mastectomy is that the doctors generally use tissue from the woman's abdomen to replace the tissue they took during the procedure. This is natural tissue that comes from the woman herself and this will offer a natural feel and look to the new chest. This is why this procedure is becoming the best option for women that suffer from breast cancer. This is a horrible disease and this procedure can help a woman not have to suffer quite as much. If anything, she can be assured that she will have a great looking chest after it is done. She can even suggest making it bigger and shaped differently than before. What a wonderful option for a woman that must go through something like this. This is not something that is offered by all plastic surgeons and it really should only be performed by those that are trained to do this. This is something that can help a woman feel feminine again and it may help her feel more self-confident about her body. A skin sparing mastectomy is a modern alternative with many benefits.
