Wordplay is one of the oldest causes of miscommunication. Masked by baroque adjectives, sarcasm and theater-like facial expressions, wordplay leads to assumptions and presumptions brought about by simple words made complicated. In this day and age, we have become learned and knowledgeable that we use words to mask our intentions. We play with words and tend to leave an unnerving and confused look on our peers’ faces—trying to make sense of what really is behind the words we just said. Confusions arise and miscommunication surfaces. The moment we open our mouths to speak, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP for brevity) is already at work. Deemed as a powerful method and approach in communication, personal growth, and self-actualization, NLP aims to help us act on what we think and believe in. Because we have the tendency to think, believe, and act differently, we have predisposed and contradicting notions of worldly matters altogether. What is true for one may not be true for others, and vice versa. The moments in which we sense, process, and interpret allow us to formulate words in our conscious mind and open our mouths to convey what we have thought of. The way we think is affected by what we have sensed and experienced in the past. Yes, the past greatly contributes to how we are living our lives in the present. Unbelievably, longstanding beliefs kept and stored in our subconscious contribute to how we devise the words we use today. We form discernments and opinions of particular events, situations, feelings and even about individuals because of the past. We are blinded by the past, thus merit a masked present and even a gray future. The past and words—are they even connected? Yes, the past and the words we use today are interconnected. More than being internally processed by our conscious mind, both are considered age-old conceptions that form a part of our present and inevitably, our future. Simply put, the words we use are not just words, but they speak of what we have undergone, with regard to a particular situation. The interplay of words posts a challenge to us individually and to the people we converse and interact with each day. Being able to understand the words used is the first step in enabling ourselves to process, interpret and exchange words with another. Feedback, in the communication process, is the most important element as it gives off the impression that an understanding between and amongst the participants [communication] is taking place. However, due to wordplay, more often than not, we project an image and impression that is the total opposite of what we mean. Words coupled with facial expressions and gestures post a hindrance to relaying the intended message to one another. Thus, miscommunication takes place. With the help of Neuro Linguistic Programming, we will be able to act and communicate accordingly without having to worry about miscommunication. Past experiences would be utilized in order to work with our present and future. Letting go of the past would be possible, thus enable us to live the life we have always wanted. Therefore, the next time you open your mouth and play with words, be mindful of its implication to others. Act according to your thoughts and beliefs and everything else will fall into their rightful places.
