Despite strict anti-drug laws enacted throughout the country, surveys show that America is in the lead as one of the top illegal drug using countries in the world. According to an article posted on CBS.com, “The World Health Organization's survey of legal and illegal drug use in 17 countries, including the Netherlands and other countries with less stringent drug laws, shows Americans report the highest level of cocaine and marijuana use”. With that being said, it is safe to assume that anyone could not only gain access to these drugs but that anyone could also become a drug abuser. While there are arguments of individuals who claim they are more prone to addiction over others, it is important to recognize that drug abuse is not a character flaw but rather a medical condition that has developed over time. While no one knows why one person becomes a drug abuser while another doesn't, drug abuse does tend to run in families which creates the argument that drug addiction can be hereditary.
