Valerie Svenningsen’s often frustrating quest for an in-home caregiver for her ailing grandmother, whom she affectionately called “nama,” led her and her husband to open a franchised location of ComForcare in 2003. She’s since also had to rely on caregivers for her mom and dad, as well as her father-in-law and mother-in-law. “We know what it’s like to be on the other side,” Svenningsen, a Frankfort resident, said. In a field where demand for in-home elderly care help is growing, Svenningsen has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Labor, the Cook County President’s Office of Employment and Training and Southland Health Care Forum to offer recruiting and training of certified nursing assistants. Svenningsen’s ComForcare offices - she also has a location in Buffalo Grove - will initially offer specialized training to their own CNAs who provide care in clients’ homes. The business is working with the Southland Health Care Forum, whose members include several hospitals in the region, to develop an instructional program that will meet state requirements. The forum helps hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other facilities find skilled workers, and offers training programs for area residents who want to pursue a career in the home health care field. Initially, training will focus on caring for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Svenningsen said. “The dementia is so pervasive,” she said. Beyond having the basic skills of caring for the elderly, caregivers working with clients who have dementia and Alzheimer’s “need to have patience and the desire to help,” Svenningsen said, recalling the sometimes trying times of dealing with her grandmother.
