The Situational Judgement Test is the measurement or parameter which is set within a specialized context of choosing the Foundation Programme. This is invigilated test that accesses the attributes which are expected from the foundation doctor. In the assessment, students are prescribed a few hypothetical scenarios or situations that are based on clinical settings or maybe education trainings for the dental or medical career. This can also involve the clinician or a student at the centre. While appearing for the SJT, it is very important for the students to read every scenario carefully to make judgement about the series of multiple options that are provided as response to these situations. These responses which you are supposed to give are being evaluated against the pre-determined scoring measurement to enable a correct picture of the situational judgement. In the SJT, it is assumed that the applicants should have knowledge and information about the job profile or role of the FY1 doctor. The applicants are supposed to respond in the SJT hypothetical situations as FY1 doctors. These scenarios may be set into the clinical settings, but it is not mandatory to have specialized clinical knowledge because the test targets certain professional attributes like your commitment towards professionalism, ability to cope up with pressures, effective communication, patient focus as well as your ability to work in the team. Situational Judgement Test is the invigilated paper which is based on assessment and taken in the UK on designated national dates, i.e., 7th December 2012 and 7th January 2013. SJT lasts for around 2 hours and 20 minutes. It consists of almost 70 items. Out of these there are 60 “live” items and 10 “pilot” items. These are basically the two types of items that are included in the exam. For each and every item you are supposed to answer what FY1 would do in given hypothetical situation or scenario. If you are eligible for UK Foundation Programme, Defence Deanery or Academic Foundation Programme, you should take this exam. You don’t really need to revise for this test because it does not involve your knowledge of clinic. In order to prepare for this exam, however, you should try out the SJT practice test or paper. It would be beneficial for you if you read certain good medical practices. Familiarizing yourself with attributes which are expected out of you in the role of UK foundation doctor can also help you. Ideally, Situational Judgement Test is developed for the final year students of medical stream. Even though SJT is being set in lieu of the Foundation Programme, but all the items included are reviewed in order to ensure that these are fair as well as can be answered by medical students. There are hardly any questions about the policies or procedures which you haven’t experienced till Foundation Programme. All you need to do is familiarize yourself with professional attributes as well as Person Specification that is expected from you as being the foundation doctor in UK. Your personal experience can definitely help you in a lot of ways. Situational Judgement Test is used to measure a lot of things in a foundation doctor in UK. SJT can be used for measuring your professionalism.
