Agile project management is a methodical approach to carrying out projects, centred around the belief that projects should be planned and worked on in small steps, with the following step in the process only ever being determined once the former step has been successfully completed. Each iteration, or step in the project is handled on an individual basis. The method often used to complete a project, is to employ a manager to lead a team towards an end goal by telling them exactly what they need to do. But in contrast to this, when a project is completed with the Agile technique, decisions are made by the entire team. Each person in the team has a substantial amount of input into the project and the opportunity to be fully involved in all stages of planning throughout its duration. The project manager assesses the fundamental requirements and then looks for an appropriate solution to define an end goal which must be achieved in order to complete the project effectively. The project manager creates a basic plan of how to reach the projects end goal. Using this information, the team work on the project in small stages with each step being built on the back of the previous one that is completed. The working process is very flexible, because the team plan and complete one small stage, then once that has been completed effectively they plan and discuss what needs to be done to complete the next stage. The idea behind this is that it is a flexible process that can be adapted to suit the needs of the organisation or customer. When lengthy projects span over several years, this element of flexibility becomes invaluable as so many factors and requirements are subject to change. Major changes that occur over time may mean that the solution determined by the project manager during the original planning stage loses relevancy and must therefore be altered in some way. During each stage of the process, when challenges come up, the team come together to identify the best way to overcome and work around them, so that the project can move on and be successfully completed. Change can be implemented immediately with this constructive system. This is more logical than having to sort out issues after a project has been completed. Agile works equally well whether applied to large or small scale projects. It is a great method for handling projects for clients and customers and works particularly well with projects that are complex in some way or difficult to accurately map out because of the nature of the business.
