Home care agencies like ComForcare have a need for more certified nursing assistants (CNAs). One home care franchise owner, Valerie Svenningsen, has long been aware of the shortage of CNAs and Home Health Aides throughout Illinois. She discovered the need when searching for private caregivers for her own family and the experience motivated her to start ComForcare Home Care in Northern Will and Southern Cook Counties almost ten years ago. ComForcare Buffalo Grove offers in home, non-medical care for seniors and others in need of assistance. Her staff includes a team of CNAs who travel to clients home to provide professional elderly care, personal care, and companionship services. As Svenningsen expanded her service area, she was able to better meet the needs of the community, but still had a hard time finding qualified CNAs in the area. New Training Available for CNAs with ComForcare To address the shortage, Svenningsen provides advanced training to her CNAs and partners with the Cook County’s President’s Office of Employment and Training (POET) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) as a Registered Apprenticeship Program Sponsor to help recruit and train new CNAs. “We are thrilled to be part of this program,” says Svenningsen, “There is a real, growing need for more Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA) and Home Health Aides (HHA) as the current generation of health care professionals and baby boomers begin to reach retirement age. My goal with this program is to inspire young professionals to consider a career in nursing, and becoming a CNA or HHA is a great place to start. Here they can learn the requisite skills, and obtain the necessary tools, to begin a stable career that’s in demand, on a career ladder into becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN). Additionally, our Buffalo Grove office is growing and this will ensure that all of our new employees are given POET and USDOL Registered Apprenticeship training.” The training program, funded by a grant from both government agencies, was designed to address the critical skill and worker shortages in the healthcare industry by using the U.S. Department of Labor, Registered Apprenticeship training model that has prepared workers in other industries for high-demand occupations. In this model, external candidates work with existing employees to complete an initial training program and then experience comprehensive, mentored on-the-job training before choosing an area of nursing in which to specialize. Benefits of an Apprenticeship Program According to the Department of Labor, this alternative to formal academic training has successfully reduced turnover and work stress for employees while simultaneously increasing the quality of home care and customer satisfaction in several case studies across the nation. ComForcare Buffalo Grove teams up with Southland Health Care Forum to provide an instructional program that meets state requirements and provides CNA training. The Southland Health Care Forum sourced training funds through the state department. The course specializes in elderly care and dementia care among others. “We are excited for the knowledge, experience and confidence our employees will gain through this program,” says Svenningsen, “Our staff will be even further educated and better prepared to provide quality care to our clients.” About ComForcare Home Care ComForcare began in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1996 as a company dedicated to establishing a new standard in the quality of non-medical home care.
