Many life-threatening diseases or cancers can be treated much more effectively if they are diagnosed early. One recent study, conducted by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle claims that a new three-question survey may help identify symptoms of ovarian cancer. Early Detection Increases Cancer Survival Rate Ovarian cancer affects roughly 22,000 women each year in the United States. From this number, less than 25 percent of ovarian cancer patients survive. However, this new survey, published in the September issue of Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology aims to help decrease the number of cancer victims. The survey consists of just three questions that check for six warning signs that may indicate ovarian cancer. These questions explore symptoms including: abdominal or pelvic pain, eating habits, and abdominal bloating. Researchers met with 1200 women ages 40 to 87 and had each one complete the questionnaire. Of the 1200, five percent were scored high enough to continue with further cancer testing. Of these women, one was positively diagnosed with ovarian cancer. However, of the women who score negatively on the survey for ovarian cancer, none developed the disease within the following year. Once ovarian cancer is suspected, further tests include ultrasounds and blood testing. If you or a loved one suspects ovarian cancer, it is important to speak with a doctor immediately. Early detection is directly linked to surviving cancer. For those who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer which has not progressed beyond the ovaries, survival rates are between 70 and 90 percent. Once the cancer spreads beyond the ovaries, the researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research center explain that these survival rates drop to 20 and 30 percent.
