In this incredibly diverse society of digitalisation, the relationships that can be created with the media are of the utmost importance to any practitioner of public relations. There is an ongoing debate as to why this is considered to be of such importance and the logic behind this, however it is evident to observe that the media has and will always hold a position of influence within our culture. This is a fact that continues to hold true despite that increases in social networking, social media and the increase of all kinds of citizen journalism. It would be fair to say that things have changed in recent years, but not enough to cause concern.
Even considering the saturation of the aforementioned factors and other internet inspired phenomena, the media still maintains a prime position of power and influence over society. The general public as a whole continues to dedicate substantial amounts of their time to media consumption, this is something that justifies the observation that the media is a driving force for the way we as a society view our on world. The massive cultural importance of the media rationalizes any importance given to media relations within the public relations industry.
An interesting question is posed when it comes time to consider what happens when this relationship spreads across national borders. A pivotal aspect for every PR practitioner is the ability to retain authority and control in any circumstance. Having complete determination over the tone and meaning through a press release or associated piece of PR material is paramount to professionalism. When you take this into account you can easily see why cross-border media and PR relations can quickly become complicated due to language barriers. In a global business world, preserving a good relationship with the media is essential for every PR department. The continued good health of this relationship can depend completely on the PR practitioners to maintain the message; this is where translation services become everybody’s best friend.
