Port Louis: a guide to Mauritius's capital

The main reason to book a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to Mauritius is to lie on its beaches, soak up the sunshine and enjoy being on an idyllic tropical island. However, this destination also has plenty to see if you take a break from the beach and visit its capital city Port Louis.

Here are just a few things you can get up to.

Visit Place D'Armes

This is the location to head to if you love learning about a country's past, as Place D'Armes is thought to be Port Louis's historical centre. You'll find the palm tree-lined square between the harbour and the 18th century Government House.

Also here is the statue of the founder of Port Louis Bertrand-Francois Mahe de La Bourdonnais. The French governor came here in 1735 and since then it became the main area in the country for history, politics and economics.

As well as seeing Government House, which was constructed when Nicholas de Maupin was governor between 1729 and 1735, you will also notice the many colonial buildings in the area, a reminder of its interesting past.

Take in a show at the Municipal Theatre of Port Louis

While there are plenty of historical attractions for you to visit in Port Louis, you may wish to spend some of your time taking in a little entertainment, as opposed to going sightseeing. In this case, you ought to head to the Municipal Theatre of Port Louis, a 19th century venue that was designed to look like a theatre from London.

Approximately 600 people can be seated here, but it is wise to book any show you want to see in advance. As it is the one of the oldest theatres in the Indian Ocean and popular with holidaymakers the world over, tickets can be snapped up well in advance.

Go shopping in Chinatown

If you have a long list of people to buy souvenirs for, you might want to visit a number of shops for you to pick up some knick-knacks. Not only will this mean you can come back with a variety of items, you can also get a taste of a range of shopping experiences that can be had in Port Louis.

Chinatown is one of the most interesting places for you to go shopping, as it is home to the biggest market in the capital. It also shows the diverse culture of the island, with many stalls selling Chinese handicrafts and eastern cuisine.

Enjoy dining out at Caudan Waterfront

Tourists who enjoy eating out will love visiting the Caudan Waterfront. The modern area is home to a huge variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, so you won't be short of choice here. You can tuck into local fare if you fancy tasting authentic Mauritian cuisine - a mix of Creole and Indian flavours - or you can choose to dine at restaurants offering international dishes.

There are also plenty of places serving light snacks, or if you're walking along the Caudan Waterfront during the daytime when the sun is high in the sky, you'll be tempted by an ice-cream to cool you down.

You can go shopping while on the Caudan Waterfront, as there is a range of stores here for you to pick up some souvenirs for your family and friends.

With so many exciting places to explore in Port Louis, you might even wish to cut down on the number of days you spend on the beach and return to the city once more during your trip.

Mauritius offers a variety of things for holidaymakers to do. As well as lying on the beach, you can learn more about the island's history on a trip to Port Louis. At Beachcomber Tours, we offer a variety of once-in-a-lifetime holidays to Mauritius so you can find ideal accommodation for your stay.
