Bowel cancer is a common type of cancer that is generally found in people over 60 years of age. Though the exact reason for this cancer is not known, there are several factors that make people more prone to this type of cancer. Researchers say that an improper diet is the main factor causing this problem. People whose diet contains large amounts of animal fat and protein are at increased risk of developing this disease. Also a low fiber diet supports the growth of the cancer. High intake of alcohol is also one of the prime causes. There are 5 to 10% chances that this disease gets carried over to people from their previous generations.
The bowel cancer is also known as colorectal cancer. The common symptoms of this disease are:
• Changes in bowel habits
• Consistent constipation or diarrhea
• Blood or mucus in the feces
• Excessive weight loss
• Powerlessness or tiredness
• Swelling in the abdomen
Treating bowel cancer
This disease once initiated, keeps on spreading to different parts of the body. Thus early detection of it is very important. Bowel Cancer Treatment can only be suggested after the stage and the position of the cancer is detected. This type of cancer can be treated in different ways. Generally people go for surgical methods of treating this disease. These methods are suitable for cancer at initial stage. If the disease has reached many parts of the body through muscles of the bowel wall to the lymph nodes, there are chances that the cancer may return even after surgery is performed. Some doctors also suggest chemotherapy and radiotherapy before or after surgery.
How the problem is diagnosed
The diagnosis of the problem is divided into three parts after which its existence can be confirmed. These are
• Barium enema – Under this test, a special x-ray of the large bowel is passed through the back passage into the bowel. This contains a mixture of barium and air. When it passes through the bowel, any abnormalities in it can be clearly observed by the doctor.
• Protoscopy – The next step is protoscopy in which air is pumped into the bowel after which a tint camera with a light is passed into the area so that any abnormal areas can be seen. This test is also called sigmoidoscopy. This test seems to be painful but it is not, though it can be a bit uncomfortable.
• Colonoscopy – The instrument used for it is called the colonoscope. It is used when the whole length of the bowel is required to be viewed. It is a long flexible tube with a camera and light. With this instrument, any abnormality or swelling can be easily detected. The patient can also take this test under anesthesia.
