Enjoy a holiday searching for strange plants Most people go on holiday to learn about local history or culture, lie on the beach or take a closer look at unique wildlife. Another reason to hop on an aeroplane though is to see strange vegetation - here are some of the most bizarre trees in the world you should see on your next getaway. Coco-de-mer trees This tree, which is only found in the Seychelles, measures 34 m, making it huge to stand next to. However, it is not only incredibly tall with the largest leaves in the world measuring 10 m by 4 m, but it also produces the world's heaviest and biggest seeds. Coco-de-mer seeds can weigh up to 30 kg, so it'll be fascinating to see those still on the tree and also ones that have fallen off and landed on the floor at the base of the trunk. Translated in English, the name means coconuts of the sea, as sailors once thought they were produced in the waters that surround the Seychelles. This is because they were mostly seen washed up along the beaches or bobbing on the surface of the water. However, they actually grow on the coco-de-mer trees, which can be found on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse. So, if you're keen to have your picture taken with one of these huge seeds, these are the isles you should make your way to on your holiday in the Seychelles. You should also make the most of the opportunity to pick up one of the seeds and have your picture taken with it, so you can show just how big they really are to your friends. Be careful though, as they are very heavy indeed! Baobab trees For really strange trees, head to Madagascar. This southern African nation is home to the Avenue of Baobabs, where an entire corridor of ancient trees stand in a line for you to walk alongside. The trees, which can be up to 2,000 years old, stretch approximately 24 m in the air, with nearly entirely straight trunks. Moreover, they don't have any branches or leaves until near the top. This is how they earned their nickname Upside Down Tree, as it appears as though their roots are sticking out of the top of the trunk. Another reason why baobabs are so odd-looking is that while they don't have a lot of leaves or branches, they are have a very thick trunk, giving them a shape you don't see in other trees around the world. Giant sequoias To see these ancient trees, some of which are older than 3,000 years, head to Yosemite National Park in the USA. These trees are so huge, you will definitely be shocked by their stature when you visit the protected reserve. In Mariposa Grove more than 500 mature giant sequoias live and, by walking in between the forest of these colossal trees, you'll feel overwhelmed by their size. Stretching nearly 300 ft in the sky, you probably won't be able to see the top of the tree if you stand at the bottom. Despite its grandeur, this isn't the tallest tree in the world. Indeed, it is surpassed by the redwood, which can reach heights of 364 ft. The Seychelles is known for its interesting flora and fauna. By booking a holiday in the Seychelles with Beachcomber, you can take a look at some weird and wonderful vegetation, including the tree with the world's largest seed, the coco-de-mer.
