Touch Screen has become established as one of the most revolutionary scientific discoveries of the present times. The touch screen display is being used in almost every kind of equipment in which a visual and user interface is applicable. Companies manufacturing these electronics utilize touch panel integration and come up with better products and user experience. The common man is also purchasing instruments and equipments with a touch screen display. For the consumer’s convenience, companies provide display solutions with LED, LCD, and touch screen integration. Starting with television sets and mobile phones to the high end and sophisticated equipment such as MRI, sonographs, and military monitors plenty of items are integrating touch screens. The service of customized displays has allowed various industries to integrate touch screens customized for their application. Mobile phones are one of the most common electronics using display solutions with touch screen display and are one of the highest selling items which utilize the technology. The rampant use of such display solutions is possible because the cost of production and manufacturing have reduced drastically in recent years. There are two basic systems in the touch screen display industry; these are the resistive and capacitive touch technologies. In a Resistive Touch Screen, there is a glass panel with a top conductive layer and resistive metallic layer. There are spacers in between these two layers in the resistive touch screen, and a scratch resistant layer is on top. When operational, an electric current runs through the two layers, which get into contact when a touch is perceived at a particular spot. Once an electric current is generated by touch, signals are transmitted to the touch driver. The Capacitive Touch Screen is smoother than that found in the resistive screen. There is a layer that stores electric charges and is placed over the glass panel. On being touched, the screen transfers charges into the finger of the user and the decrease in charges is measured in circuits located in the corners of the screen. The difference in current is then transferred to the driver software. With the capacitive touch screen, the picture is clearer and touch experience is smoother. A variant of this technology is the projected capacitive touch screen, which can read touch at more than one point leading to the concept of multi-touch screens. With the introduction of display solutions for various touch screens being provided by companies, end users are getting the benefit to the highest level. Although resistive touch screen applications are cheaper, the touch interface of the capacitive touch screen is smoother. Plenty of equipments and gadgets are increasingly being operated via touch screen display.
