How does Ultrasonic Cleaning work?

Business
Ultrasonic cleaning is a new technology that utilizes high frequency sound waves or ultrasonic waves to let a cleaning solution work better on surfaces like glass, plastic, ceramics, rubber or metals. These sound waves work above the range of human hearing so you don't hear anything. But then, the waves can affect liquid solutions so that they can remove stuff like dirt, oil, grease, wax and dust on a particular surface. This technology has been highly useful in the medical and manufacturing field where cleaning is of utmost importance.

You will know an ultrasonic cleaner once you see one. It usually consists of an ultrasound generator and some transducers below a stainless steel container. The generator creates the ultrasonic waves which are then maintained by the transducer. This creates a system of expansion and compression in any type of liquid which can cleans any type of object.

You see, this is what happens inside an ultrasonic cleaner. First, you need to fill the stainless steel container with an aqueous solution. It can be water or water with some detergent. Once that is done, you operate the cleaner. As the generator and transducer work together, expansion and compression take place. Expansion happens when you see some gas bubbles appearing while compression happens when you see the bubbles bursting. This happens at a really fast pace of around 30-120 kHz. As lots of bubbles form, they collide with each other. This creates some impact energy which can remove any stubborn stain on any object. It does this in the micron level so every bit of the stain is removed. In fact, it is so effective that it can even remove fingerprints.

For an ultrasonic cleaner to work properly, it is very important to note some things.

First, make sure that a proper solution is used. It must be in aqueous or semi-aqueous form. A recommended solution is a detergent solution because the dramatically lowers the surface tension in the water. With a lower surface tension, the solution requires lower energy to form the bubbles and clean the stained surface.

Second, make sure to do the cleaning at optimum temperature. The number of bubbles will usually increase depending on temperature. However, it will start to decrease as the temperature reaches 60 degrees Celsius and it stops completely at the solution's boiling point.

Third, you need to know the right frequency for the right object. While you can control this, some people think that they should just increase the frequency to get a better cleaning action. But this will depend on the object. If you are dealing with an object with really small particles, I would recommend that you go for a higher frequency so you get smaller bubbles. But if you are cleaning a heavy or bigger object, then you may want to lower the frequency.

So if you need an object to be completely clean, use an ultrasonic cleaner. It is sure to remove any contaminant whether it is dirt, dust, blood or grease even at micron levels.
