If you are expecting the arrival of a little boy, one thing you will need to take into consideration after the birth but before you go home is circumcision. Although this is not a mandatory medical procedure, it is still an option that needs to be considered. Usually pain control measures in newborns involve sugar water, anesthetic that is applied topically and/or a nerve block. There are two ways that the foreskin can be removed from a newborn. One method is called the GOMCO and the other is called the Plastibell. The GOMCO clamp technique is surgical, while the Plastibell technique is not. If you opt for the GOMCO method, a scalpel is used to cut off the extra skin, and the tip of the child's genitalia is covered in protective gel to prevent infection. If you want the less invasive method, the Plastibell procedure is where the excess skin is tied off with a plastic bell and the tied off skin and bell falls off within two weeks. Some common and normal side effects are swelling, light bleeding and redness. If those symptoms become pronounced or excessive, you need to alert your child's doctor right away to rule out infection. It is important to care for your child's genitalia properly after a circumcision to prevent reattachment of the foreskin and infection. You will need to gently pull the remaining foreskin back from the glans so it doesn't become reattached.
