Phlebotomy is probably not a term in the working vocabulary of most people, and yet all of us have encountered a phlebotomist at some point in our lives. Give up? This is the person who draws blood from us at the doctor’s office or the hospital! Most people, as well, are probably not aware that phlebotomy technician training is relatively short and results in a great career in the medical field. After graduating from high school, I traveled half way across the country to attend a large four year university. I made friends, took some interesting classes, and made really good grades. Three semesters later, college life had grown tiresome for me. I felt that I was ready to begin a career, and could not imagine waiting another 2,5 to 3 years to do so. As a nursing major, I knew I wanted a career in the medical field but also felt that I could begin in that field and pursue nursing on the side in the future. I began phlebotomy technician training at a great school near my home town and was able to save money by living at home. I worked a full time job during the day and attended classes in the evenings. It was a busy schedule, but I still had time for a social life. Within a few months I was ready to sit for my phlebotomy certification exam, and, thanks to the great training I received, was able to pass the exam with flying colors. Since medical careers are always in high demand, I had a job waiting for me upon completing my education and exam. I currently work as a phlebotomy technician at a prominent children's hospital in the Midwest and make very good money doing something that I love. My favorite moments are when I can make kids laugh, in spite of the fact that I am going to be drawing blood from them.
