Being retired does not guarantee that you are a safe driver. The following are some ways that you can stay safe on the road as a mature driver: Take A Course Taking a driving course might not be a bad idea if it has been fifty years since you took your driver's education class. There might be certain laws or regulations that you forgot about. There are probably some new laws and regulations that were made since the time you received your first driver's license, and you were simply uninformed about it. Taking a course is a good way to stay up to date on what is going on in the traffic world. If you are unsure of where to find a mature driving course, you may want to check the following resources: Do an online search for a mature driving course in your area. Talk to friends that are your age to see if they have any information. Contact your city to see if they offer a course. Look in the newspaper for driving course listings. Be Honest Be honest with yourself and your driving skills. If people have mentioned to you that you should lay off the wheel, or if you notice that you are unable to see at night, don't try to fool yourself. It is understandably hard to face and hard to admit, but you are actually putting yourself and others in danger when you ignore the warning signs. If you have a hard time seeing at night, ask a friend to drive you to where you need to go. Call a cab, take the bus, or walk. There are other options and being honest is definitely the best one. If you are unsure about your driving skills, you may want to talk to someone who will give you their honest opinion and just see how they feel about you driving on the roads. Understand Medications In your more mature age, you might have some medications that you take on a regular basis. Talk to your doctor to understand what the side effects are of each medication. There are some that can impair your perception or your vision. Driving while on certain medications can become a dangerous situation. If you are unable to speak to a doctor, and if you do not understand the warning labels, then just don't take the risk. You've heard the saying, Better Safe Than Sorry. It rings true when driving with medications. If you are unsure, just don't drive. As was mentioned above, you can call a friend or a taxi and get a hold of the doctor for the next time you are ready to get behind the wheel.
