Pharmacists will be responsible for monitoring the use of antibiotics and help to control them, under proposals announced by the chief medical office Professor Sir Liam Donaldson. Additional measures will require NHS Trusts to report hospital infection problems, such as gastro-enteritis outbreaks that cause ward closures. Some £12 million is to be put towards the additional work for pharmacists. Sir Liam said the NHS would be holding talks with overseas hospitals to find new ways of tackling infection and with that creating new healthcare jobs. He said: "We are in no doubt that the issue of all healthcare associated infections, especially those acquired in hospital, is an extremely serious one - especially the development of resistant infections. "It affects a range of organisations and institutions around the world - but in organisations such as the NHS, where patients are recovering from illness and operations, its potential is much more serious." Professor Richard Wise, president of the British Society for Antimicrobial Resistance, said: "Antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem and should concern everyone. The new initiative to encourage hospital pharmacists to get involved in reducing antimicrobial resistance is to be greatly applauded."
