After a March-like day we are going to have a raw and windy nightwith periodic showers. I am forecast the heaviest showers beforemidnight, but even after that there will be some areas of rainmoving through around a very slow moving storm to our east. Thisstorm, a true June nor'easter has produced several inches of snowatop Mount Washington, not unprecedented for June, but a bitunusual. Many inches, up to eight, has fallen across Maine wheresome roads are washed out and golf courses have been turned intolakes. Tomorrow is looking like more of the same but the rain willbe lighter. I do think you could see the sun trying to come out inthe afternoon as well. I send out tweet updates throughout the day so if you like instantweather tips, please follow me on Twitter at @growingwisdom Tuesday When storms become stuck in one place they spin around like a top.The moisture and clouds also spin along with the flow. This lateststorm, eventually, will spin itself to death by pulling in drierair from the edges of itself at the same time it is moving furtherout to sea. On the jet stream map below, I drew some arrows to show how thewinds are blowing up at around 30,000 feet. The issue is that thosewinds steer storms at the ground. We have an ocean storm caughtbeneath that flow. That storm is represented by the L on the maplabeled "next few days". So, if the storm is under the whirling air above it it just keepsrotating around and around. Each time to rotates, areas of cloudsand showers move into our area from the north east. You can see howthe rain is moving down the coastline from Maine in the radar imageunder the jet stream picture. Late week and upcoming weekend By Thursday and Friday, the drier air will be more prevalent andthe chance of showers will diminish. You are still going to see theword showers in the forecast from many media outlets, but they aregoing to be very isolated, short-lived and rather insignificant.Temperatures will also return to what you would expect for earlyJune, the lower 70s. As of now, the weekend is looking stellar with sunshine andtemperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s. After all the wet coolweather of the start of the week, this weekend is going to seemlike a wonderful change. The warmer air will remain with us intonext week as well. North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) The NAO is that persistent pressure pattern out in the Atlanticthat has a major affect on our weather. Interestingly it isflipping to a negative phase, something we rarely have seen inmonths. (part of the reason no snow last winter) This flip will, atleast in the short-term, turn our weather a bit cooler than normaland somewhat on the damp side as well. How long this lasts isunsure, but as we head into summer this could be a major player inour overall weather. Pollen and drought Not that you need me for this, but....the drought is officiallyover for now. As a matter of fact, much of the country has seen animprovement in the drought situation. Florida and the southwestpart of the US are still having major issues however. You can seewho is in severe drought on the map below. We are now in the normalrange.
