An English Kitchen: Tea Towels, Aprons and Oven Gloves

Business,Home Improvement
Aprons, oven gloves and tea towels are quintessentially British. However, whether British or not, they do prove a necessity in any kitchen – each to a differing degree depending on the type of food cooked.

Oven gloves are essential because they prevent burns (I know, many a time have I burned an arm or a hand because I wasn’t wearing the correct clothing). Aprons protect clothing – again, speaking from experience, they are essential; I have numerous tops ruined by food stains, which is incredibly irksome. However, aprons and oven gloves serve as fashion statements too. You only need to walk into a haberdashery store to see the extent to which this is true. Oven gloves, aprons, and tea towels come in a wide range of styles and colours.

Our favourites designer is Ulster Weavers, who make some truly excellent examples, all of which are of the utmost quality. I love the majority of their designs, and I would certainly recommend them to friends and family. My particular favourite, amongst the current Ulster Weavers collection are the counting sheep tea towels – which are super, super, cute; the union jack oven gloves, which perfectly capture the country’s spirit during this Olympic year; and then the hot dogs apron. As a style, these are certainly Country Living standard and they probably feature in middle class kitchens the length and breadth of the country.

Aprons are an essential item in the kitchen, particularly if you want to keep your clothes clean. They are useful too; many have front pockets, so you can put various utilities inside them to keep them safe. If, like me, you are always losing things while you are cooking, they prove invaluable. As well as the hot dog pattern, you will find many different designs, and you are very likely to find an apron that suits the colour scheme of your kitchen. Whether contemporary or modern, there are aprons to suit all tastes.

Oven gloves are probably even more important than aprons, particularly if you do a lot of cooking. They can be a little encumbering some, but the majority of styles available on the market today, do facilitate movement. The oven gloves of today are much more flexible and protective than they were in times gone by. They have the latest heat resistant properties, and are able to withstand extremely high temperatures. Again, these gloves come in a range of styles and patterns. The great thing is that aprons and oven gloves often come in sets, and so they each match the other.

If you live in England, then you know that it is traditional to have garish, patterned and funny tea towels, and that an English kitchen is incomplete without at least one funny tea towel on display. Fortunately, there are many to choose from and they are great fun. A nice tea towel will brighten up any home.

Fun, fashionable and functional, there are very few types of clothing that can boast such qualities, but this is exactly what you should expect from Ulster Weavers. You can browse the latest collection now, at http://www.smithsofloughton.com/
