Starting a new sport can be very difficult. You might not know anyone who plays the sport, so how do you meet people? What equipment do you need? Where should you play? If you have a lot of questions like these, you're not alone. When Douglas Duroste French started to play soccer, he was in the same predicament. So don't worry, he has helped us put together a short list of what you should do to start playing soccer.
• Check the internet or your phone book for a local sports or soccer league and join it! If you cannot find one, start your own or try to get in contact with anyone you see playing to see if they want to organize games.
• Make sure you buy a pair of cleats, shin guards, and light clothing. Playing soccer in the summer can be grueling depending on where you live, so the light clothing is a must. If you're going to play in the winter, Under Armour, and thick long-sleeved shirts work very well. Don't forget a hat and gloves, either.
• Start running on your own to build up your cardio. Soccer isn't any fun when you have to catch your breath every 5 minutes.
• Take some time to watch professionals play on TV. You'll get a better idea of how the strategy works and what a game should look like. There's no one better to learn from than a pro!
• Don't be afraid to make mistakes! This is a sport; you are going to make mistakes. You're going to miss goals and mess up passes. Don't worry about it! You’re there to have fun and get some exercise.
• Be a team player and be supportive of everyone who is playing. You're not in this to win the World Cup. Don't go overboard with the competition.
If you follow this basic list you shouldn't have any trouble starting your new life as an amateur soccer player. Soccer is a great way to meet new people and have fun getting in shape. You're going to meet some great friends and certainly create a lot of memories as a group.
If there is anything else holding you back from playing soccer, just let it go. So what if you're a little out of shape? This isn't high school anymore! Most adults are out of shape. They just to play to have a good time and hopefully get in better shape than when they started out! Douglas Duroste French has had a great time playing soccer and you will, too.
