Why visit Greenwich Park?

Travel & Tourism
If you have booked into a luxury hotel in London and are looking for places to visit, Greenwich Park is the perfect spot to add to your itinerary. Situated in maritime Greenwich, this Royal Park is packed with great attractions that will help you see another side to the capital.

One of the best things about coming here is that you will have the opportunity to explore fascinating museums and see impressive buildings, as well as enjoying the stunning local scenery. Indeed, as Greenwich Park forms a substantial hill, it offers fantastic views out over the local area - and some of its most glorious architecture.

Within the park itself are a number of attractions, such as the Royal Observatory. You may be familiar with this site as the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian, but there are many other reasons to visit.

For example, it is home to London's only planetarium. Head into this dome and you can be immersed in images - both real and computer-generated - of space, taking you on journeys to see phenomena such as the birth of a star or distant galaxies.

In addition to the planetarium, there are also a number of astronomy-focused galleries where you can learn more about space, as well as see fascinating artefacts. For example, you can use an interactive tabletop to hear experts answer your questions on the cosmos, while you can also see meteorites that are millions of years old.

It is worth bearing in mind that the observatory will be closed between July 7th and August 3rd, so if you are keen to visit you should plan you holiday for a little later in the year.

Another great place to go to is the National Maritime Museum. Anyone interested in history or the sea will find this a wonderful place to explore, thanks to its combination of intriguing permanent and temporary galleries. For example, among the amazing artefacts you can see is the coat Nelson wore in the Battle of Trafalgar - and you will even be able to spot the bullet hole where he was shot.

If you are interested in the history of the slave trade, you can explore the exhibition The Atlantic: Slave, Trade and Empire, while anyone keen to learn more about the past of the River Thames should peruse the temporary exhibition Royal River: Power, Pageantry and the Thames.

In addition to housing fascinating historical artefacts, the museum also has a collection of personal accounts of the nation's seafaring story. These can be explored in the Voyagers gallery.

Should you have an interest in architecture, meanwhile, Queen's House is a great place to visit. It was designed based on Renaissance principles of proportion, which has served to make it a physical embodiment of a turning point in English architecture. Look out for the Great Hall in particular, which has the dimensions of a perfect cube.

You do not need to be an architecture enthusiast to enjoy a trip here, however. A number of art and history-focused galleries are also housed in the building, so you can explore some of the fine paintings that have been in its collection for centuries.

Of course, should you visit when the weather is good, the park is also an excellent place to simply relax and enjoy the scenery. As there is so much to do, it is easy to spend a whole day here.
