A Guide to Tulsa Zoo

Education,Research,Travel & Tourism

Opened in 1927, the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum is owned by the city of Tulsa and located in Mohawk Park, the largest municipal park in Oklahoma and one of the largest in the United States. The zoo stretches across 78-acres, has almost 2,500 animals and covers 436 species. The zoo has many attractions that will keep the family busy all day long.

Africa

Located at the south end of the zoo, the African area is one of the most popular exhibits. This includes such animals as the Aldabra Tortoises, Cape Buffalo, Cheetahs, Giraffe, Kudu, Lions, Meerkats, Ostrich, and Zebra. This area is also home to the Maasai Village of Tanzania. The exhibit is a recreation of a typical Maasai village.

Tropical American Rainforest

This exhibit re-creates Central and South American rain forest environments. It incorporates great expanses of translucent panels which illuminate the canopy of the rain forest, while a path along the jungle floor takes visitors through stands of live, lush tropical vegetation. The rainforest houses many exotic species including the black howler monkey, anaconda, piranha, dwarf caiman, and jaguar.

Dave Zucconi Conservation Center

This is conservation center is home to a variety of animals from birds and primates to reptiles and fish. There are displays such as the Secrets of Survival exhibit, demonstrating the characteristics that help animals and plants survive in their environment and also the Reptile Nursery allows visitors to watch as baby reptiles emerge from their eggs in incubators.

Asia

The Asia exhibit contains big cats like the Malayan Tiger and the Snow Leopard native to central Asia. The Siamang Overlook is also located in the Asia exhibit which is a viewing deck offering excellent views of Siamang and Spectacled Langur monkeys. One of the most popular parts of Asia is the Elephant Encounter where you can watch the keepers walk the elephants through their training and exercises.

Ocean and Island

Our keystone exhibit is the California Sea Lion exhibit with the famous star sea lions, Dorsey and Briney. This exhibit is being redesigned for visitors to have an even better and more up close experience. Here you will also be able to enjoy the award-winning African Penguin exhibit and the entertaining Black and White Ruffed Lemurs from Madagascar.

Children’s Zoo

Also referred to as the Contact Yard, this is an area with small farm animals that children can physically touch. One of the most popular animals to visit in this exhibit is the Prairie Dog where children can watch the dogs interact. In addition, guests can also enjoy guinea hogs, llamas, river otters, kangaroos, emus, donkeys, turkeys and much more.

The Tulsa Zoo is a great place for people of all ages. It’s recommended to at least devote half a day to the zoo to make sure you get the most out of all that it has to offer without being rushed. If you plan on traveling to visit Tulsa Zoo, there are many local hotels in the surrounding area for affordable prices, so pack up the family and head there soon!
