Deciding about a new fence may initially seem a relatively easy task; then you start to realize it's not quite as simple as you first thought. Questions need answering such as what fence style do you want and what material do you want it to be made using? Prior to going down these routes, think carefully about how long you expect to reside in your home. In simple terms, the longer a fence is meant to last, the greater the cost, so therefore if you expect to move home in a year or two, there seems little point spending a lot of money on a long lasting fence. However, if you have no intention of moving you are better off investing in a good quality fence; one that won't need replacing in a few years time. There are many choices of material for your fence; traditional wood (soft or hard wood), vinyl, metal chain link or aluminum are some examples. Each has their own positive and negative features; for example, a wooden fence can really enhance the look of your back yard, but it is likely to need more maintenance than most other materials used in fencing and will possibly need replacing earlier. Privacy is of course another factor when choosing your fence. Do you want to enclose the garden area so it's private, or do you want certain parts of the fence private while having a more open affect in some other places. Perhaps you would prefer an open area where the fence is between a neighbor and you, so you can chat and not completely block each other out. Of course, you may want to isolate yourself from your neighbor, in which case you want a solid fence. The correct type of fence will enhance the look of your property; get it wrong and it can have the opposite effect. For example, let's consider a vinyl fence. It can be a blocked private fence, picket and post or rail; the choice is yours. Given the right circumstances a vinyl fence can add a real appeal to your home. The great thing about modern vinyl fencing, in addition to it looking great, is that it is durable, very low maintenance and offers a good degree of security. Galvanized chain linked fencing does the job well, but at a low cost compared to many other materials. It lasts for years (expect something in the region of 40 years) and providing you purchase your fence from a reputable company you will find that little or no maintenance is required. If you are looking for real security, then you can't beat an aluminum fence. They will last a lifetime, are almost as strong as an iron fence, yet it won't corrode or rust. You will probably never have to paint it, because if you purchase your fence from a good quality manufacturer it will have already been coated and sealed several times. It can be a difficult choice, but you can be sure there is definitely a fence the right choice for you and will fit your budget.
