Grampians National Park or Gariwerd as it is known in true Aborigine style is one of the most spectacular sites in the Southern Hemisphere. Hence, it was no surprise that Australia bestowed upon it the honour of being an ‘Australian National Heritage’. The indigenous population of Australia; the Aborigines are considered to have been the original residents of this jungle terrain. They would camp under the stone refuge of the mountains and decorate the walls with murals and traditional designs. Close examination of this graffiti has led to historians establishing that the natives had been present within the area that is now designated a National Park, over 10,000 years ago. The artwork leaves telltale signs of how progressive the Aborigines had been even during that era; the tools and workmanship astonish all those who navigate themselves around the rocks and cliffs. The rocky, rugged cliffs present panoramic views that stretch far beyond the imaginations of a dozen nature artists put together. The ‘Balconies’ or ‘Jaws of Death’ on the sediment stand stone rocks are precarious but gives one the feeling of a bird for a fleeting moment. It’s not only the nature lovers that meander through the large acreage as adventure seekers, such as glider pilots, trekkers, rock climbers and hitch hikers too find the venue attractive for their various stunts and expeditions. Glider pilots in particular will find the ‘Grampians Wave’ a weather condition favourable to gain unprecedented altitudes. The Halls Gap with its fine greenery and abundance of nature is a location that can be safely dubbed your home for a few nights if camping out is your cup of tea. Spring is a good time to visit the park as the wildflowers are in full bloom giving the park an added cheer. The native fauna; kangaroos, emus, echidnas and wallabies can be spotted in their natural habitats and the weather is more conducive for outdoor activities during the three months of Spring. Though there is a considerable distance between Melbourne accommodation and the Grampians National Park, along the freeway it is actually a comfortable drive and most Melbourne hotels would arrange the tour at a reasonable fee. A camp out at the venue will be a refreshing change from the luxuries offered by a hotel such as The Langham Melbourne.
