Review of the song “Poutana stin psychi" (The Whore In The Soul) Nikos Economopoulos Music : Dimitris Paraskevopoulos Words: Panagiotis Mandilaris CD “Tha Eima Edo” EMI – Greece 2011 The stunning success of the live performances, highly controversial talks and the almost complete absence of the radio broadcast: such is the fate of the song that no matter what, is one of the major hits of the double platinum album "Tha Eimai Edo." Nikos Economopoulos many times in interviews and even directly from the stage explained that the meaning of this song is deeper than it may seem on the basis of its name or superficial reading of the text. The singer even claimed that the situation described there is not related to his life, that it is not addressed to a particular woman, but in general to the very phenomenon of a treason. Even some politicians commented on the content of the song, seeing in it a reproach of the younger generation to the government. But what this song is actually about and does it require explanations or excuses? Its music, written by Dimitris Paraskevopoulos, is certainly a striking example of zebekiko, with alarmingly increasing drama in the verses and the energy spills in choruses. The score of the song is brilliantly written and the melody of it is easily remembered. It is the words by Panagiotis Mandilaris to cause controversy... Well, let us think: who and what this song is about? You can certainly go to the generalization and claim that corruption exists not only among women, and that the politicians now and then deceive the expectations of people, that everything in this world can be bought and sold. But all these realities do not exist for a loving heart. Until the moment comes... Whose soul has been sold by the heroine of the drama? Apparently all this is about a soul, entrusted to her. After all, being in love, we reveal the soul to another person. Desperation emerged in the hero of the song, because it was his soul once embedded in the beloved, have been given away or may even was sold off. That is the tragedy of the trust betrayed: "Othello was not jealous, he was trusting." The shock of this kind either pushes people to commit a crime, or can be splashed out in the insults. Thus, this song reveals the tragedy of a disappointment, which is the most typical for the young people. That's why it has to be sung by a young man, otherwise it may seem crude. In the performance of Nikos Economopoulos this song gets its ideal embodiment, retaining youthful spontaneity of the reactions on the drama of life. The voice of Nikos brings out a lot of what can not be read straightaway in the words. Namely, its noble tone colour adds some more meaning to this song. In this combination lies the success of a song that deserves more serious attention by the radio broadcasters. The soul, to say the least, worth a life, is not it?
