Wooden shed plans come in various designs and sizes, but they all share certain basic components. These essential features include the foundation, framing, sides, and roofing. However, your wooden shed can still be unique, if you wish, if you apply your own preferences in materials and certain details in each component. Even if you're building a wooden structure, it's still ideal to build it on a foundation made of a concrete slab. Some people just do a good finishing of the concrete and already make use of it as their flooring. Others opt to put tiles on it. But others who want an all-timber look like a log cabin place wood slabs over the concrete. Piers, which are also made of concrete, are placed on the foundation. Wooden posts are set on top of the piers. This post-and-pier structure has to be built securely as they will be supporting the whole structure. All timber materials to be used, especially as posts, must be treated against rotting and pests. If you go through wooden shed plans, you'll often see post-and-beam and stick types of framing. In the first type, thick timbers are usually utilized as support materials for the roof. If you're opting for this kind of framing, it would be best to finish the wood materials in such a way that they will match the overall look you want, since the post and beam structure is left exposed. On the other hand, stick framing normally needs timber pieces each measuring only 2 inches by 4 inches. This framing is meant to be hidden. The simplicity in design and lower cost makes stick framing more popular among many shed builders. A shed made of wood can have plank, plywood, or shingle exterior siding. Timber from cedar, spruce, and redwood trees are usually chosen for plank siding. The planks are usually placed overlapping each other horizontally. If you want plywood siding, you can choose from the plain ones or those with textures. They're commonly available in sheets measuring 4 feet by 8 feet. While shingles are popular as roofing style, they can also be used as exterior siding for your shed. Just like in shingle roofing, the thin strips of wood are set in an overlapping pattern. Common roof designs in wooden shed plans are gable and saltbox shed styles. Gable roofs have two sloping surfaces that form an "A." A saltbox shed-style roof has only one sloping surface so the sides are always of two different heights. Options for these basic components depend on your location, budget, and preference, among others. Be sure to consult a professional to make sure you have the best-suited design and materials for your shed.
