Using coach hire has a number of significantly advantages over other means of cross-country transport. At the same time, it has an equal number of disadvantages, making it a choice which requires careful consideration. The chief advantage of using a coach is cost. Finding enough passengers who want to join you in travelling to a destination can be relatively simple, depending on the destination, making the total cost of the hire per passenger quite low. Naturally, the more people who are involved, the cheaper the journey becomes – up until you reach the point of needing two coaches. For the likes of a sporting event like a football, rugby, cricket, or tennis match or a rally, festival, protest, conference, or any other activity which involves hundreds of people, a coach is ideal. Using coach travel on an existing route, however, which does not require you to actually hire the vehicle and the driver, is generally about as costly as the alternatives. Booking a seat on the train adequately in advance does lower the cost, making it comparable or equal to the cost of a seat on a coach, which negates the advantage of using a road vehicle. However, there is no such thing as a private train, meaning that your group will be interspersed with other members of the public. This could create some confusion, particularly at train changes and station stops, which risks someone getting lost en route. The other obvious disadvantage of using the train is that it does actually have changes and stops. Coach hire means that the vehicle is yours to direct for the day and is not limited by the route of the tracks. This means that you can select your own collection point and drop point and do not need to use stations which are close by, but not actually at, your destination. The biggest problem with coach hire, though, is that coach seats are possibly the most uncomfortable devices ever to be given the name “seats”, with the possible exception of the electric chair. Even the device of capital punishment would have been more comfortable than a coach seat up to the point that you are plugged into the mains electrical supply. There is often virtually no leg room and, because of the design of the seat, stretching your legs across two seats is just as uncomfortable. Enduring that sort of torture for the numerous hours it would take to cover the same distance a train could cover in a fraction of the time takes an enormous amount of determination, which no amount of savings could provide recompense for.
