Rain or Shine’s winning streak had been recently halted by the very powerful Gary David of the Powerade Tigers, even though Paul Lee of Rain or Shine had been determined to keep their record as the Governor’s Cup steadily grows hotter and hotter after every match.
Rain or Shine’s Previous Win According to latest PBA News, rookie Paul Lee knocked in a cold-blooded triple with 2.6 seconds left as Rain or Shine slipped past Barangay Ginebra, 93-90, to stay unbeaten in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Lee finished with 18 points, but none bigger than his dagger of a trey over the outstretched arms of Rudy Hatfield in the dwindling seconds that sealed the Painters’ fourth straight victory.
The Painters nearly wasted a solid fourth quarter, before import Jamelle Cornley gave them a lifeline with a steal on Cedric Bozeman to set the stage for Lee’s heroics. “He’s (Lee) not afraid to take the ball in his hands with the game on the line,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.
Lee waved off a pick by Cornley and found himself one-on-one against Hatfield. With a little breathing space, Lee launched the triple that once again broke the hearts of the Gin Kings, who fell to 2-2. “We wanted the ball in Cornley’s hands but we trusted him (Paul) to make the right play,” said Guiao.
However, Rain or Shine’s shining moment stopped dead when the team came head-to-head with the Powerade Tigers, with Gary David in the lead?
Devoured by the Tigers Upholding his reputation as a clutch player, Gary David matched a six-year old record while spoiling another one. David exploded for 30 points as Powerade roared to a third straight victory at the expense of Rain or Shine, 104-98, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
David helped the Tigers jack up their record to 3-2 while snapping the Elasto Painters’ four-game winning run, which was a franchise best. He scored at least 20 points for the 19th straight game, matching the streak of Danny Seigle with San Miguel Beer (Petron) in the 2006 Philippine Cup. The 6-foot-2 gunner also breached the 30-point mark for the 18th time in 43 games.
According to PBA Latest News, Powerade import Omar Sneed also produced a terrific effort with 24 points and 20 rebounds, keeping a perfect slate since replacing Rashad McCants. Sneed’s layup that beat the shot clock with 14 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Tigers, 104-98.
“What’s important is that those who we expected to deliver delivered, particularly Gary (David) and Omar (Sneed),” said Powerade coach Bo Perasol. “We had extra motivation for beating the only undefeated team in the tournament.”
